I was terrified to take my son on his first flight without diapers just two weeks into potty training. But, I trusted him and our ability to work as a team and he did an outstanding job with this new milestone! Here's are some tips to help make this big step successful:
One of the blocks of Oh Crap! Potty Training is to attemp some outings. I don't think the author really meant to jump from a quick run to Best Buy to a three and a half our flight while commando, but here we are! Life is busy, and we have places to explore!
The number one thing that helped us make this flight a success was communication. We prompted our toddler to pee and poop in order to set him up for success and we listened to him when he told us that he needed to go to the bathroom.
Have your kiddo wear easy on/off pants.
Have your child wear water-friendly sandals on feet that are easy to clean in case any accidents happen.
Always have your Summer travel potty seat within reach.
Pack a pad of post-it notes to cover the auto-flush sensor on the toilet.
Talk about the fact that the toilet will be loud when it flushes, encourage your child to hug your leg or cover their ears for comfort.
Take your child to the bathroom to go pee right before you get in the TSA Security line.
Take your child to the bathroom to go pee right before boarding.
Listen to all prompts that your child gives you about needing to pee or poop. Take them seriously every time.
Use a waterproof chucks pad to “catch the crumbs on the seat” for an extra sense of security without bruising your child's ego.
Pack two diapers out of sight as a personal safety net for yourself. (Because you know that if you have them, you won't need them)
Expect success!
